Flights & Rights – Sentencing Reform and Mass Incarceration

February 25, 2020 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

From the ACLU:

Flights & Rights is our monthly community series featuring important civil rights issues and free beer in the KEXP Studios Gathering Space!

ACLU ‘s Legal Strategy Director for Smart Justice, Jaime Hawk, will be on a panel moderated by ACLU-WA Executive Director Michele Storms on sentencing reform in Washington. Across the country, the already staggering number of people locked up in jail and prison more than quadrupled during the last four decades. In Washington State, the imprisonment rate and total incarceration rate have more than doubled since 1978. Despite plummeting crime rates, our government is locking people up for longer and longer. Learn about how the proliferation of long and life sentences has been a key driver in growing Washington’s prison population. If laws aren’t reformed soon, a growing number of people will die behind bars.

Join ACLU’s Legal Strategy Director for Smart Justice, Jaime Hawk, and a panel of allies to learn what we are doing to advance sentencing reform and end mass incarceration right now.
