People’s Town Hall for a Green New Deal

February 22, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

We need your help.

Mitch McConnell and the oil, gas, and coal billionaires he works for are scared of our movement. McConnell announced this week that he’s bringing the Green New Deal resolution to a vote in the Senate. McConnell is calling this vote before we’ve had much time to build support in the Senate, because he wants to destroy the momentum for the Green New Deal. We intend to make him regret it.

This is an all-hands-on-deck moment for the Green New Deal movement. We don’t expect to win this vote, but the more senators who vote for the Green New Deal resolution, the more influential the ideas in the resolution will be. We can’t afford for our two senators in Washington State to side with the oil, coal, and gas billionaires.

Join us for a youth-organized, People’s Town Hall for a Green New Deal with Senators Cantwell and Murray. The youth advocates of the Sunrise Movement’s Seattle Hub have issued a formal People’s Summons to the senators—our public servants—urging them to attend and hear why it’s important to us that they vote for the Green New Deal resolution.

The People’s Town Hall for a Green New Deal will be next Friday, February 22nd from 6:30-8:30 at the Gethsemane Lutheran Church. Next week is a Congressional recess, so we expect the senators to join either in person or by video call. If the senators choose not to face their constituents, we’ll proceed with the meeting, and share the video with the senators’ staff and local media.

If you’re new to Sunrise and the Green New Deal movement, please join! We’ll begin the meeting with a brief presentation about Sunrise and the Green New Deal to get everyone up to speed. All ages and experience levels are welcome. See below for a brief agenda.

6:30–7:00: Introductory presentation about Sunrise and the Green New Deal, including some tips about how to talk about the Green New Deal resolution with the senators.

7:00–8:30: One-minute comments from the public begin, addressing our senators (whether they attend or not). We’ll start with Sunrise youth members and local community organizations, then open the floor to the public.

Want to speak, but not sure where to start? We’ll be hosting a storytelling workshop this week to help you craft your personal story about why addressing climate change now is so important to you. We’ll send out event details shortly.

Hope to see you on the 22nd!
