The Green New Deal and How to Pay for It

May 16, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

North Seattle Progressives is sponsoring this opportunity to learn about Modern Monetary Theory, to be able to permit members of our community to assess the viability of this approach for themselves.

This event is free! It will take place in the large meeting room at the library.

The presenters:
Vandana Whitney is a former public school teacher. Several years ago, she began studying a field of economics called Modern Monetary Theory, or MMT, and attended the First International MMT Conference in 2017. When Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez brought MMT into the national conversation with the Green New Deal Resolution, Vandana joined Seattle 350’s Green New Deal coordinating team and Sierra Club’s Green New Deal leadership committee. In her committee work, Vandana focuses on questions about monetary policy, and uses her teaching skills to explain MMT’s currency analysis to those who want to understand the emerging national debate on economics.

Randy Mandell is a medical doctor. His understanding of the urgency of the climate crisis led him to study Modern Monetary Theory and to work with national MMT economists addressing the question of how to fund a Green New Deal, including a Federal job guarantee and Medicare for All. Randy has given radio and public televisions interviews and enjoys engaging with communities via public presentations that help people understand how the power of public money is critical to creating a more economically just and sustainable future.
