You Are Being Legally Poisoned & That’s Not the Worst of It

March 12, 2019 @ 6:30 pm

You Are Legally Being Poisoned and Why That’s Not the Worst of it: What communities are doing to change that…

This presentation explains
• a growing movement called Community Rights that builds healthy, resilient communities
• how corporations have manufactured a structure of law that insulates them from community control whether the issue is aerial pesticide spray, privatization of public water, corporate development or more
• how communities are organizing to frontally challenge the current structure
• how to shift from a reactive stance toward state-sanctioned corporate harms to a proactive stance of building healthy, resilient communities

Speaker: Kai Huschke
• an organizer for the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund (CELDF)
• a lecturer for CELDF’s national Democracy School
• resides in Spokane, Washington.

Why CELDF has been invited to our community:
The Kitsap Environmental Coalition (KEC) was formed in summer 2018 as a result of concerns among residents about the aerial pesticide spraying of clearcutting by industrial foresters in the Hansville and Little Boston areas. KEC took legal action to appeal the state’s issuance of a permit for such spraying. After extensive investigation, KEC realized that the issue was more fundamental than the state’s current permitting processes. The issue relates to community rights. This presentation explains why an approach based on understanding community rights needs to be at the core of protecting our air, water, soil, and other natural resources.
