Update on Virginia Mason/CHI Merger: The Effect of ERDs (Ethical and Religious Directives) on Secular Health Care

Save Secular HealthCare WA is dedicated to protecting secular healthcare in Washington, starting with fighting the proposed (Virginia Mason) VM/CHI (Catholic Health Initiatives) merger and then working to increase patient access to all healthcare services legal in this state regardless of the religious affiliation of the medical system and to increase oversight and accountability of healthcare providers
On July 16th 2020, a memorandum of understanding was announced regarding the merger of Virginia Mason with Franciscan CHI. VM is a non-profit regional healthcare system based in Seattle. CHI Franciscan is a Catholic non-profit health system based in Tacoma which is affiliated with CommonSpirit Health, a larger consortium of Catholic medical systems based in Colorado. Catholic hospitals and all their affiliates are subject to the ERDS – Ethical and Religious Directives. Virginia Mason and its employees will be forced to adhere to the ERDs if this merger succeeds.
The list of medical services impacted by ERDS is long and effects every member of society. A partial list of denied procedures includes the following: contraception, sterilization, abortion, fertility treatments, surrogacy, hormone therapy, and end-of-life death with dignity care.
