Webinar: Understanding Surveillance Technology with ACLU

July 15, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Open to all. Register online at: https://bit.ly/Surveillance_Webinar

We’re all aware of how technology has seeped into our everyday lives, but do we understand the impacts of new technologies on our privacy and civil liberties? Throughout history, surveillance technologies have been used as tools to target and oppress–from the incarceration of Japanese Americans during WW2 to the present day Black Lives Matter movement. Surveillance affects us all…did you know that border agents are implementing face surveillance at international airport terminals in WA, with plans to eventually surveil all domestic passengers?

In the 2020 legislative session, Indivisible teamed up with the Tech Fairness Coalition to kill a bad data privacy bill, and pushed hard for a ban on government use of face surveillance. Together, we can continue the fight for privacy and online safety by learning about the interplay between surveillance, technology, and our civil liberties. Join us for an introductory discussion with Jennifer Lee, who is the Technology & Liberty Project Manager at the ACLU of Washington. Jennifer will provide an overview of the history of surveillance, and delve into its present day uses. We’ll learn about the Tech Fairness Coalition, and what community groups are doing in WA to protect privacy. This informal presentation will have time for Q&A, and people of all levels of technological understanding are welcome to participate. More information about some of the things we’ll be discussing can be found on the Technology & Liberty page at ACLU-WA. https://www.aclu-wa.org/technology
