This Saturday, August 26th is Women’s Equality Day. The ERA is a proposed constitutional amendment that would prohibit discrimination of rights under the law based on sex, a distinction surprisingly missing from our constitution. 35 states have ratified this Amendment and only three more are needed to formally amend the constitution. When Congress approved the ERA in 1972, only 35 of the required 38 states ratified it by the 1982 deadline, and the ERA failed to pass. Now, Democrats in both chambers of Congress have introduced bills to remove the old deadline. If Congress passes the new bills, only three more states will need to vote in favor of the ERA in order to establish landmark constitutional protections against sex discrimination. Wear white, and contact your representatives.
