a study and practice group on prison abolition

July 23, 2020 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

From 350 Seattle:

a study and practice group on prison abolition. With the latest uprisings for racial justice, we’ve seen a shift in the political climate—one that’s intimately connected to the world we need to build for the stability of the physical climate.

There won’t be a teacher for the group — instead, it’ll be a learning space facilitated by people from our Solidarity Work Group (Michael Graham, Ahlay Blakely, and Anna Humphreys). We’ll be guided by the work of Critical Resistance.

We’ll meet every other week on Thursdays from 5-7pm beginning on July 23. Please register here to receive Zoom call details and curriculum.

Some of our initial learning goals are:

  • Define (and in some cases redefine) terms used by both the legal system and abolitionists
  • Comprehend reformist vs. abolition policies
  • Understand abolition based in Black feminist theory
  • Verse ourselves in how prison abolition intersects with climate justice and a Green New Deal
  • Practice our ability to communicate with others questioning prison abolition
  • Research alternatives, functioning alternatives, and case studies
  • Learn limits prisoners face upon release

Our practice will focus on continuing to build relationships with those doing abolitionist work in Seattle and beyond.
