Women’s Equality Day – At the behest of Rep. Bella Abzug (D-NY), in 1971 the U.S. Congress designated August 26 as “Women’s Equality Day” to commemorate the 1920 certification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting some women the right to vote.

Women in Washington gained the right to vote in 1910, a decade before the passage of the 19th Amendment.

By law, the 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote but in reality, many discriminatory practices prevented non-white women from voting including Native Women, Asian Women and Black Women, This is why intersectionality matters. Because without it, we whitewash parts of our history in one fell swoop. Erasing history is erasing identities. And it is wrong.
