Climate Emergency Gathering at Olympia State Capital

Our Climate Emergency Gathering at Sta,chas village site of Nisqually people (Olympia State Capital) September 24th will also be the welcoming celebration point for walkers completing our 4 day 40 mile “Walk to Protect & Restore the Salish Sea 2019” for Salmon, Orcas and treaties. The time is now for our State representatives to declare a Climate Emergency and then act upon that declaration by drafting Emergency legislation terminating all current fossil fuel expansion projects and proposals in the State of Washington such as Tacoma LNG (Fracked gas), Kalama Methanol (Fracked gas), Tacoma Par Pacific (Tar Sands oil import expansion), Puget Sound Pipeline (Tar Sands oil import expansion), North Seattle Lateral Pipeline Expansion (Fracked Gas LNG). The time is now to bring breach the 4 dams on the lower Snake River. The time is now tell Wa. St. Reps to honor our Tribal Lawsuit we won and immediately fund the opening of the culverts for our Salmon to swim through.

We are in a state of Global Climate Emergency with near daily reports of habitat die off, near extinctions, extreme heat waves in the Arctic, extreme heat waves in Europe, Russia declaring a national emergency as unprecedented wildfires ravage the Arctic in Siberia, Alaska, Greenland and Canada with 10 million acres burned to date. We the people will demand that our Washington State elected officials act accordingly and put a stop to the fossil fuel driven destruction of our Climate Systems which our children will be left to grapple with because Washington State is responsible for our children’s future. We are standing up for our Tribal Treaty rights as our salmon are dying in the Pacific NW rivers from Climate Emergency driven shallowing and warming waters which causes the starving of our critically endangered Southern Resident Orcas. Our Coast Salish First Peoples made sacred promises to our SCHAYNEXW (Salmon People), our QELTHLOLMECHEN (Orca people), our SMYETH (Deer people) and to all the children of our XA,XE TENGOXW (Sacred Mother Earth), human and non-human that all would be kept well until the end of time through deep respect and a giving back to the circle of life. Now it is everyone’s turn to make this promise and act upon it.

The people of our Salish Sea are rising like the tide to protect what we love and cherish as sacred, to stand together like the trees and lift each other up and the “each other” includes our grandchildren’s grandchildren, the orca and salmon people, the tree and bird people and all the other animal people of our Salish Sea. To stand in solidarity with Salish Sea tribes to ensure their treaty rights are honored and respected and for other nations to have their unceded territories and natural laws honored and respected.

We will have Tokitae / Salish Sea Whale Sanctuary Proclamations available for people to sign at this Climate Emergency Gathering. All things are connected… if we save the the salmon we will save our Orcas and in turn we will save ourselves.

Please bring signs and banners to encourage our Washington State representatives to declare a Climate Emergency and to Terminate all current and future fossil fuel expansion projects.
