New Book Club Forming via BI Senior Center

January 13, 2022 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Chrysan Gallucci (retired professor of education policy at UW) is forming a book and discussion group through the Bainbridge Island Senior Center that will focus on issues related to democracy, racism, and US history.  The group will meet (via zoom for now and hopefully hybrid in the future) every two weeks on Thursday mornings from 10am to Noon starting January 13th.  The group is not limited to seniors and is not limited to members of the BI Senior Center (although membership is encouraged).  At this point, the group has both men and women and includes a range of age groups.  Chrysan would like to limit the group to about 10 people and she currently has 6-7 interested.
The first book the group is reading is the following:
Learning from the Germans:  Race and the Memory of Evil by Susan Neiman
From Publishers Weekly:
“An insightful comparative analysis of post-WWII German sentiments about Nazi atrocities alongside southern American attitudes about the Civil War and slavery, suggesting how Americans might better come to terms with their country’s history…[Neiman’s] commentary is thoughtful and perceptive, her comparison timely.  This exceptional piece of historical and political philosophy provides a meaningful way of looking at the Civil War’s legacy.”
And from the New York Times review of books:
If you are interested, please contact Chrysan at chrysan@uw.edu for more information and for the zoom link.
