Pledge to Teach Truth Day of Action MAC

May be an image of text that says 'JTIQUE PLEDGE to TEACH the TRUTH #TeachTruth 15S ster'

from MAC:

Here is our statement in regard to the suppression of history and political bait the right is using CRT for.

The Multicultural Advisory Council appreciates and supports the amazing teachers in our district committed to teaching truth.

Our community stands in support of our teachers and empower them to teach full and accurate U.S. history and current events.

Our community stands in support of our school board, who in 2020 implemented a Race, Equity, and Identity policy to teach culturally inclusive curriculum.

Our teachers help young people to learn our collective history and to understand our present. We are confident our young people will use this knowledge to define their future in the world beyond our schools.

Our community prioritizes the importance of knowing history. We acknowledge the land we live upon is Suquamish territory whose people were harmed due to racist policies. Accounts of history must never be suppressed.

Introducing subject matter inclusive of all history, and specifically the history of the Indigenous, Japanese, Jewish, Filipino, Indipino, Latinx, and Black experiences on Bainbridge and in America, increase awareness and understanding of the history of our region and nation.

Legislation has been introduced in more than 28 states banning teaching the truth about the role of racism, sexism, and oppression throughout U.S. history. Many of the laws inaccurately refer to critical race theory (CRT), a 40-year-old framework of legal analysis examining racism in America, which is not taught in K-12 schools. There is a national, politically driven effort to confuse critical race theory with any work related to equity.

This is a Day of Action to raise awareness of the dangers of suppressing historical elements, such as racism.

Not acknowledging the country’s actual history, including racism and other oppression, is deception, not education. Teaching young people about centuries of resistance to that oppression is empowering. Resistance has always been multiracial, multiethnic, and built across lines of gender and class. Understanding this can be an incredible and powerful source of unity for all.

We support our teachers.

We support our young people in becoming critical thinkers and respect their desire for truth..

We reject any legislation censoring educators and forcing them to suppress historical truth.

Thank you
