Violence in Schools: “Paper Tigers” Film Screening & Discussion

March 22, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

What if we knew how to reduce violence in our schools?

What if we already know RIGHT NOW?

Paper Tigers is an award-winning documentary about the students and faculty at a high school in Walla Walla, Washington that successfully reduced violence by 75%. By following the lives of several at-risk students, we get to see their transformation from kids who skipped school, did drugs, and even threw chairs at teachers, to high school graduates with bright futures.

The high school accomplished this feat through a scientifically proven method called trauma-informed care. This method has been replicated in schools across America, with similar positive effects on reducing violence and increasing graduation.

Join us to watch this documentary together as a community, and afterward for a discussion about what we can do and is already being done to implement these methods in Bremerton and Kitsap. A panel of local experts from schools, mental health, and the department of justice will be on hand to answer your questions.

NOTE FOR PARENTS: This is a candid documentary, and as such there is some difficult subject matter that may not be appropriate for some young children, such as discussions about sexual abuse. There is also some swearing. Use your best judgement when considering whether to bring children.

Presented as a partnership of Bremerton Neighborhoods Now and Kitsap Strong, with generous support from Kitsap Community Foundation, Olympic College Foundation, and Olympic Educational Service District 114.
