Washington State Rail in the Public Interest: A Panel Discussion

April 13, 2022 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

There’s a right track and a wrong track for Washington state rail. Join Solutionary Rail allies for a Panel Discussion about what’s on deck for WA state and what we can do to make sure that our state’s rail future is truly for the benefit of the public – and not just for billionaires.
Wednesday, April 13th
5pm Pacific

Last year, Bill Moyer and Tom White published “There’s a Right Track and a Wrong Track for Washington State Rail.” Recently a coalition of state rail-based groups came together and wrote a Joint Rail Policy Statement which was shared with policymakers as they considered state transportation budgets.
What our state policymakers ended up budgeting for, however, was not for rail in the public interest.
Their legislation is drawing media attention. Tom Banse reported on KUOW, “Cascadia bullet train on track for big bucks to get rolling, but big uncertainty remains.” The Everett Herald published an Editorial “Bullet train study should include other options.” Fortunately the media is paying closer attention to Governor Inslee’s-favored, Microsoft-sponsored “Ultra” project.
Learn why SR doesn’t consider the Ultra project the right approach to rail in the public interest. Join us as we dig deeper into the Ultra project and compare it with the Amtrak Cascades Long Range Plan, a viable, sensible, and proportionate plan commissioned by WSDOT and updated in 2006 – but currently shelved.
Solutionary Rail is in favor of faster trains and better service. But let’s dig into what is in the public interest, versus what is being pushed by billionaires for their own purposes.
Guests on the panel include Tom White, Lael White, Tim Gould, Arvia Morris, and Mary Paterson. The discussion will be facilitated by Solutionary Rail Campaign Lead, Bill Moyer.
