Public Hearing: Legal Protections from Fossil Fuel Impacts
July 9, 2019 @ 6:15 pm - 11:30 pm
In the face of international pressures to expand oil shipments through Northwest Washington, the Whatcom County Council has proposed legal protections that would require fossil fuel projects meet standards that will protect our community’s public safety and the environment.
After three years of preparation, new draft code amendments for Cherry Point land use are finally on the table for public comment. It’s time to rally in support of legal protections for people and the environment that prevent new fossil fuel shipping facilities and hold oil refineries to stronger permitting conditions to reduce pollution and increase safety when upgrading their facilities.
For this hearing, the council needs to hear very specific comments on the amendments. To learn more about what’s on the table, attend the Clean Energy Activist Meeting on Wednesday, June 26th to craft a message that will make a difference. You can also send comments to councilmembers at council@co.whatcom.wa.us
Whatcom County can stand up to Big Oil companies like British Petroleum and hold them accountable for the impacts of their fossil fuel projects. They should be held to standards that protect public safety and the environment — not be given a free pass.
Please join us for the hearing and wear red, and attend next Wednesday’s activist meeting to learn more and prepare:
