Seattle Council: Vote YES on Climate Justice!

Four days before the world’s largest-ever climate mobilization, the Seattle City Council is voting on THREE pieces of climate legislation.

We need YOU to show up to support these three climate bills.

1 – The Green New Deal Oversight Committee Ordinance.

This ordinance would create a Green New Deal Oversight Committee. The GND Committee would be comprised of 11 people from frontline communities, 3 people from the labor movement and 3 climate pollution reduction specialists. If this passes, the Green New Deal Committee will create policies to forward Seattle’s Green New Deal, and will regularly convene officials from every City Department to ensure that they are taking actions that will ensure that Seattle succeeds in its goal of eliminating climate pollution by 2030

2 – The Climate Walkout Resolution.

Introduced by Council Member Sawant, this resolution will express the City of Seattle’s support for the September 20th Climate Walkout, as well as encourage Seattle’s employees to join the Climate Walkout.

3 – The Oil Heating Tax Ordinance

Introduced by the Mayor, this ordinance would place a tax on oil heating in Seattle homes and commit the city to ensure that all homes currently heated by oil are transitioned away from oil heating by no later than 2028. 2028, you say? We know that is too late, and that’s why we are glad that Council Member O’Brien intends to introduce an amendment that will ensure that we have eliminated all oil heating tanks by no later than 2026. We need people to show up and testify in support of this amendment!
